#216 - Overheard, by elfin

They pass me on the pavement as they walk through the cold winter night; one man in a suit and one in a heavy coat, hand in hand. I hear the man in the suit ask, So... what are we? to which the other man chuckles, responding, Do we have to be something? Suit Man shrugs but Coat Man squeezes his hand and asks, What do you want us to be? Their voices are fading but I hear the reply, I want us to be you and me, and I smile to myself and wonder if Coat Man gets it.
